Spain: a leading role in Europe for organic farming (IT)


MAPAMA, the Spanish "Ministerio de Agricultura y Pesca, Alimentacion y Medio Ambiente" , in a comment to the statistical data related to the organic sector in 2015 confirms that the country continues to remain the leader in Europe for organically cultivated surfaces, surfaces that have doubled in the last 10 years.

According to data, in 2015 areas cultivated with the organic farming method  reached 1,968,570 hectares, an increase of 18.4% compared to 2014. More than half of such surface are permanent pastures, important for the development of organic livestock: the organic dairy farms have  risen to 7,553, tripling in 10 years and increasing by 24% compared to 2014. A similar increase was shown by  the operators (producers, processors and distributors), who in 2015 rose to 37,870 (in 2005 there were 17,509).

The Spanish organic leading region is is Andalusia, with organic farming covering 51% of its surface, 65% of farms are organic as well as 34% of the operators. Followed by  Castilla-La Mancha and Catalonia.

Concerning  permanent crops, the leading role  belongs to the olive groves, with 197,136 hectares (about 7% of all Spanish olive groves) whose output is more than 200,000 tons of olives for the oil mill; followed by dried fruit with 113,958 ha (13% of the total area) and  vineyards with 96,591 hectares (9% of the total vineyard area), producing  more than 395,000 tons of wine grapes. As for arable land, the first position is occupied by wheat (209,001 ha), followed by pulses and protein crops (39,555 ha, more than 10% of the total area) and fresh vegetables and strawberries (13,578 ha).

Going back to livestock farms, 3,515 are those who raise cattle, with over 190,000 heads, followed by farms rearing  sheep (2,169 to 596,209 heads) and goats (777 holdings with about 69,500 heads).  As a result,  livestock  productions outputs are 28,849 tons of meat and 24,087 t. milk, more than 4 million dozen eggs, 911 tons of honey and 2,709 tons of fish from organic aquaculture.

As for the activities of processing companies  linked to organic productions, at the end of 2015 the registered ones reached   4,960, of which 1,785 operating in the fruit and vegetable sector, 969 for drinks (especially wine) and 715 for olive oil.

With regard to the activities of the processing companies related to livestock production, they reached 865, led by those for meat and related products (351) followed by those involved in dairy productions (141, in 2005 they were only 54) .
