Maurizio Martina, the Italian Minister of Agriculture, visited SANA, the International Exhibition dedicated to organic productions taking place in Bologna. "Italy confirms its European leadership in the organic sector –said Mr. Martina- : 300,000 hectares converted in 2016, an area equal to the entire province of Bologna, including homes and offices. The sector’s growth rate has reached 20% of cultivated areas, operators and consumption, a heritage based on the confidence and desire of consumers to support a production system with the lowest impact on the environment".

At Sana, the most important Italian event in the organic sector, the Minister met entrepreneurs, farmers and young people, "the cornerstones of this success," he stressed. "We are working with them to make the sector stronger with concrete initiatives. For the first time, we have established certified organic school meals and reviewed the control system to make it more transparent and effective. At European Union level,  where the reform of the organic sector is being discussed, we are not available to take back steps on the safety and sustainability of products. We on the contrary think we have to invest more in research, to better organize producers and enhance local productions through the creation of additional organic districts.   A necessary intervention for a sector that has now exceeded € 5 billion value and that is increasingly part of the distinctive character of the Italian agricultural model”.

According to Ismea-Nielsen's investigations made for the Italian Ministry of Agricultural Policies, wines and sparkling wines are the organic products that in 2016 showed the most significant increase  (+ 41% on 2015). Significant increases also for meat (+ 42%), fruit (+ 20.3%), vegetables (+ 16%), dairy products (+ 13.5%), olive oil (+ 11%). The data for the first half of 2017 are also good,  with a further growth of +15% of organic sales, compared to +3.2% of non-organic packaged products, and with real exploits on wines and sparkling wines (+ 110%) and meat (+ 85%).
