Organic crops in Europe: +1 million hectares (IT)

Rassegna stampa

In Europe, the organic UAA grew in 2016 by one million hectares compared to the previous year: Italy is the top country with the widest organic surface increase, with more than 300 thousand hectares. These are the figures released by FIBL - the International research institute on organic farming - at Biofach, the most important international organic fair.

Second only to Spain as organic surface (1.8 million hectares), Italy is the country with the highest number of organic operators in Europe (72,154), grown by 20% compared to 2015. The sector in 2017 is worth 3.3 billion euro as regards domestic sales (+ 9% compared to 2016) and accounts for 5% of total Italian agri-food exports, ie almost 2 billion euro. In addition, the organic production system employs over 200,000 operators in farms, in processing and distribution, in control activities, technical assistance and in the linked industry.

In 2016, 3.4% of the food expenditure in the shopping trolley was organic. A choice based on trust, safety and quality of Italian organic products. The numbers are therefore positive and encouraging for a sector that, according to market analysis, should have suffered a contraction in recent years also due to the economic crisis.
