Spain: the 2017 figures of the organic sector (IT)

Structural data

The Spanish Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food (MAGRAMA) has released detailed data on organic production in Spain for the year 2017. The data confirm the trend of steady  growth and the consolidation of organic production, observed in the recent  years . The area dedicated to organic production increased by 3.1% compared to 2016, exceeding the 2.082.000 hectares. Half of this surface is dedicated to permanent pasture, one quarter to arable crops and the rest  to permanent crops.

These figures confirm an annual average growth trend of the total organic area of 3.7% in the last 5 years.  

Going into details, the production of vegetables shows  an increase of hectares dedicated to vegetables, fodder, fruit, nuts, citrus and berries, the keeping of those dedicated to vineyards and olive groves, and the decrease of areas cultivated with cereals and legumes.

In terms of animal production, the data show  an increase in the number of cattle and sheep's milk farms, apiculture and poultry. The number of animals shows an  increase for cattle, laying hens, rabbits and hives, as well as for aquaculture (+29%).

The  number of operators  increased by 5.3% to 43, 984, with a growing number in all categories: primary (4.2%), processing (12.8%), importers (28%) , exporters (49%) and wholesalers (22%).

     - Per capita expenditure in Spain: € 36.33 (+ 12.58% compared to 2015)

     - Organic market share: 1.69% of the total food market
