EU: a new amendment to Reg. (EC) No 889/2008 (IT)


A new EC Regulation, modifying the Regulation (EC) No 889/2008, was published  on 22 October:  the Commission Implementing Regulation (EU) 2018/1584.  The Reg. 889/2008 was modified in different points as follows:

  • Sodium hydroxide is now authorized to clean and disinfect frames, hives and combs in beekeeping;
  • Cholesterol can be now supplemented to the diet of young shrimps and prawns;
  • It is clarified that organic baby food can be supplemented with minerals, vitamins and other substances;
  • A derogation for non-organically reared pullets for egg production is postponed until 31 December 2020;
  • A derogation for the use of 5% non-organic protein feed for pigs and poultry is postponed until 31 December 2020;
  • Communication between Member States on non-compliances should now occur through the specific Commission's computer system;
  • Changes in list of allowed fertilisers in Annex I; 
  • Changes in the list of allowed plant protection products in Annex II;
  • Changes in the list of allowed products for wine production in Annex VIIIa.

The last three changes were adopted following  the indications provided by EGTOP in relation to the requests submitted by the Member States
