European Court of Auditors: biodiversity on farmland, CAP contribution has not halted the decline

In Europe, the number and variety of animal species on farmland – “farmland biodiversity” – is in marked decline. Yet the EU committed to stop biodiversity loss by 2020. To do this, The Commission planned to allocate €66 billion from the common agricultural policy between 2014 and 2020.

Organic farming in Jordan: a CIHEAM delegation meets the Jordan Minister of Agriculture and Environment

On the side-lines of the 11th meeting of the Mediterranean Organic Agriculture Network (MOAN) held in Amman,  the CIHEAM Bari Director, Maurizio Raeli and the CIHEAM Secretary-General, Plácido Plaza, met with the Minister of Agriculture and Environment of the Hashemite Kingdom of Jordan, Mr. Ibrahim Al-Shahahdeh. Jordan and the CIHEAM have been developing joint activities for several years, particularly in the fields of research and training.


The contribution of organic farming to the rural areas sustainable development

The National Rural Network 2014-2020 published a study whose main theme is the sustainability of the organic method, and its capacity to contribute to rural development, generating positive effects on the environment, society and the economic system. The current method of calculating agri-environment payments does not allow the incentive to be linked directly to the achievement of these results of collective interest, so that the development of organic farms followed diversified and not always consistent paths.


An Italian Strategic Plan for organic agriculture

On 23 March, the State-Regions Conference approved the National Strategic Plan for organic agriculture. The plan, the result of an activity carried out by the Italian Ministry of Agriculture (MIpaaf) along with all the sector players, includes a set of 10 actions (a summary in English HERE) promote the growth of the sector to be reached by 2020.
