France: 2018, a record year for organic sector

With 5,000 more organic holdings at the end of 2018, their number in France has reached 41,600 , approximately 9.5% of the total French farms. French organic production has substantially  doubled in 5 years: the strongest progression ever recorded. Better still, in 2018 the organic surface reached  2 million hectares, which corresponds to 7.5% of the French UAA (6.5% in 2017). A remarkable growth, mainly due to the increase of cereal, viticultural and fruit and vegetable production.

Almost 9 out of 10 French French say they have consumed - in the course of 2018 - at least once organic products; 7 out of 10 have done it at least once a month and 12% have bought them every day.

Spain: the 2017 figures of the organic sector

Structural data

The Spanish Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food (MAGRAMA) has released detailed data on organic production in Spain for the year 2017. The data confirm the trend of steady  growth and the consolidation of organic production, observed in the recent  years . The area dedicated to organic production increased by 3.1% compared to 2016, exceeding the 2.082.000 hectares. Half of this surface is dedicated to permanent pasture, one quarter to arable crops and the rest  to permanent crops.

EUROSTAT: organic crop area continues to rise in the EU

With 12 million hectares of certified area or area under conversion in 2016, organic farming made up 6.7% of the European Union's (EU) total utilised agricultural area (UAA). Since 2012, the area devoted to organic farming has grown by almost two million hectares. Similarly, an upward trend can be observed in the number of registered organic producers, which reached 295 600 at the end of 2016.

Spain: now available organic farming statistical data for the year 2016

The Spanish Ministry of Agriculture, Food and the Environment released the statistical data on the Spanish sector of organic farming at 31 December 2016 with the publication "Agricultura Ecologica - Estadisticas 2016". The document highlights that, in 2016, the total area dedicated to organic production increased by 2.5% compared to 2015, reaching nearly 2,019,000 ha. The number of operators also increased (+ 5.3%), reaching 39,744.

Germany: organic UAA +15% in 2016

In 2016, organically managed land in Germany grew by around 162,000 hectares to 1.25 million hectares, a rise of almost 15% compared with 2015. This growth is divided equally between pasture and arable land. The federal states of Saxony and Bavaria saw the greatest expansion.
