The ups and downs of international organic trade: how is this possible?, by Gerald A. Hermann

Gerald Hermann, a pioneer in the organic sector (he was president of Naturland and IFOAM, today he is director of Organic Services, and is known worldwide as one of the leading experts in the organic agri-industry) publishes a reflection on the sector that has been shattered by various scandals on national and international levels. The bigger the scandals, the more dramatic the consequences for the countries of origin, which brings about huge shifts in international commodity flows, as import and export figures indicate.

Now published in the Official Journal of the EU the COMMISSION IMPLEMENTING REGULATION (EU) 2019/446 of 19 March 2019 amending and correcting Regulation (EC) No 1235/2008 laying down detailed rules for implementation of Council Regulation (EC) No 834/2007 as regards the arrangements for imports of organic products from third countries.

Organic production in developing countries: a study on how to increase it

A recent study published in the Proceedings series of Advances in Social Science, Education and Humanities Research reveals that, while many farmers in Indonesia want to transition to organic and know the regulations, more research and extension would help them actually implement organic management. In this study, researchers surveyed 70 rice farmers in Indonesia and found that the vast majority of them know about organic practices required to comply with certification, but they face challenges to implementing these practices.

Imports: the new Implementing Regulation (EU) 2018/949

The new implementing Regulation amending Regulation (EC) No 1235/2008 laying down detailed rules for implementation of Council Regulation (EC) No 834/2007 as regards the arrangements for imports of organic products from third countries has been published on the EU Official Journal L 167 of 3 July 2018.

The new Regulation modifies Annexes III and IV of Regulation (EC) No 1235 of 2008.

New rules for electronic certification of EU organic imports from third countries

The European Commission has published the new EU rules introducing a system of electronic certification for imported organic products . The new rules  will be applied in 6 months, from 19 April 2017.
