During December 2011, prices at the source of Italian organic products recorded a slight increase as a tendency, and this trend was mainly due to the increase of fruit and extra-virgin olive oil prices.
Prices at consumers' level for the main products showed a substantial stability in relation to the same period of 2010. In some way it is possible to highlight the trend, rather frequent during 2011, of a more balanced distribution of the value all along the chain.
Furthermore, with reference to the prices at the source, the organic products vis-à-vis of the conventional ones did record again a prices trend showing a lower rate of inflation for some livestock sectors (pigs, cows, eggs), and in that of durum wheat, whilst the contrary happened in the fruit and vegetable sector, olive oil and soft wheat.
About the "sentiment" of organic operators for their sector, the "trust" ISMEA index indicates positive values all throughout 2011, as it was for 2010, a value higher than the one for the overall food industry, especially in 2011. This "feeling" is surely due to positive levels of orders and production expectations.

The market note (in Italian)

Source: ISMEA
