The previous MOAN meeting, (held in 2007 in Imzir, Turkey) had decided
to concentrate the group activities first of all to fill an important
gap: the lack of statistical data on organic agriculture in the Region.
Since then, the Eurostat questionnaire to collect data was tested in
the non-EU MOAN Countries. A twinning scheme was proposed to further
develop data collection system in the network Countries, with the most
developed ones. It was important that, in the end, all participants
agreed on the applicability of the Eurostat questionnaire to gather
data in their Countries; they also approved it to be the official
format for the MOAN statistical data collection. Following such
decision the governments engaged themselves to send to MAIB
(Mediterranean Agronomic Institute of Bari), by the end of July of each
year, their statistical data. The next network meeting will be probably
held in a European Union Country in the beginning of 2009. The
Mediterranean Organic Agriculture Network was conceived and lunched
(1999) by MAIB first as a group of Mediterranean expert on organic
farming. More recently (since 2006), it has become a real institutional
network. Organic agriculture is regarded as a potential tool for the
strengthening of the Euro-Mediterranean relationship and a major factor
for each Country development.
Fonte di informazione: «Greenmed Journal», n. 3, maggio-giugno 2008, p. 41.
