Biofach 2011 – Report on the market: positive trends at international level

<div style="text-align: justify;">Organic sector, including
non-food (such as cosmetics), continues its positive trends everywhere around the world. The crisis
did not very much touch it. In the USA and Europe the growth continued, even if slowing down a bit,
only in UK the trend was more noticeable. Already in 2008, with 50.9 billion of US$, the
international organic market&nbsp; trespassed, for the first time, the threshold of 50 billion of
US$. The experts indicate a further growing. The following is the picture of the different
countries.<br><br><span style="text-decoration: underline;">USA</span>: the turnover of organic food
products worths 24.8 mld di US$, and the growth trend continues. OTA, the Organic Trade Association,
did show great satisfaction for a 5% increase of sales recorded in 2009. In the same period, the
conventional market increased only of +2%. <br><br>The largest <span style="text-decoration: underline;">European markets</span> are Germany, France and UK. Europe, with USA, is among the
largest world markets. In Europe, 2008 brought an increase of +10% on a world turnover of 18 bl of
Euro, following&nbsp; <span style="font-style: italic;">Agrarmarkt Informationsgesellschaft
AMI</span> (D) data.<br><br><span style="text-decoration: underline;">Germany</span>: in the first
2010 semester the increase of consumption of organic products reached + 10%. The <span style="font-style: italic;">Bundesverband für ökologische Lebensmittelwirtschaft BÖLW</span> (D)
reports a turnover for the sector of 5.8 billion Euro, whilst <span style="font-style: italic;">Bundesverband Naturkost Naturwaren BNN Herstellung und Handel</span> (D), the German
Federation of food and natural products production and marketing, talks about a +10%
increase.<br><br><span style="text-decoration: underline;">France</span>: the growth is steady: 300
new farms per month&nbsp; entered the organic system in 2010. The market value is about 3 bl of Euro
(in 2009 it was around 400 ml Euro), so the increase was around 15%.<br><br><span style="text-decoration: underline;">UK</span>: the organic cosmetics are towing the sector,
increased by one third and reaching a turnover of about 40 ml euro, while the turnover of organic
food decreased by 13%, with a value of 2 ml Euro. <br><br><span style="text-decoration: underline;">Other European countries</span>: the positive trend is confirmed, at different level,
also for countries like Austria, Italy, Spain, the Netherlands, Poland and Tchecz Republic. In the
first 4 months of 2010 the increase in Austria, on 2009, was of 30%. The turnover in Italy was 2.35
bl Euro, while in the Netherlands, always in 2009,it reached 647 ml Euro (+11%). The Eastern
countries have on the contrary increased their cultivated surfaces. FIBL data report a +7% in Poland
(up to 367,000 ha), while the Tchecz Republic in the summer 2010 recorded already a +11% consumption
in relation to 2009, and the surface reached 443,000 ha, that is 10% of the total agriculture
