As foreseen by Art. 41 of EC Reg. 834/07, it has now been published the Report from the Commission to the European Parliament and the Council on the application of Council Regulation (EC) No 834/2007 on organic production and labelling of organic products. It examines the experiences gathered since the Regulation editing (from 2009) in its application. The document indicates the need, based on the experiences accumulated to date, to open a constructive confrontation among European Parliament, Council and stakeholders. On such a basis the Commission will be able to elaborate new legislative proposals, in order to explore new paths to streamline the organic legislation structure, thus improving the sector development in the EU.

At the end of 2009, the total organic certified area in the EU (27 countries) covered 8.6 million ha (it was 6.5 million ha in 2005), with an increase of 33%. Always in 2009, organic farming in the EU reached 5.7% of the total agricultural surface (3.6% in 2005).

The Report

Source: SINAB
