France: organic farming in 2012

<div style="text-align: justify;">At the end of 2012, organic farms in France reached 24,425 units, an increase of 5.6% compared to 2011 (+ 1,290 farms in one single year). Organic farms account for 4.7% of the farms in France. The UAA in organic reached 1,032,941 hectares, out of which 855,644 certified as organic and 177,297 in conversion, an increase of 5.9% over the previous year. Organic surfaces at the end of 2012 represented 3.7% of the agricultural area in France.<br><br>As regards the number of organic operators at the end of 2012, the total number of operators reached 36,766 (4% more than in 2011), out of which 12,341 non-producers operators (+2% compared to 2011):<br>- 73% preparers from raw materials originating from organic farming (8,785 operators)<br>- 26% distributors of organic products (3,172 operators)<br>- 1% importers of organic products from Third countries to the European Union (179 operators).<br><br>The organic market also had a good expansion in recent years, with € 4 billion as revenue in 2012 (against 2.1 billion in 2007). The consumption of organic products reached 2.4% of the total food market (compared with 1, 3% in 2007).
