Organic surfaces increasing world-wide: a study of Worldwatch Institute

Organic productions in the world are
growing steadely: this is the information given by the Worldwatch Institute in a study published a
week ago, largely based on figures published by IFOAM and FiBL in 'The World of Organic
Agriculture'. The Worldwatch indicates that in 10 years, from 1999 to 2009, the land
cultivated organically have more than tripled to 37 million hectares.
The countries bearing the
largest amount of organic surface are Australia, New Zealand and the Pacific Island States
(12.1 million hectares), followed by Europe (10 million ha) and Latin America (8.4 M ha), while
Europe appears the continent that has changed the most, with an increase of 9% between 2009 and
2010.
Concerning sales at domestic level, United States appear the most dynamic country, with a
sales growth of 11.5% in 2011, up to 31.5 billion dollars. And even if China (1.4 million ha) and
India (0.8 million ha) showed a slight decline in their respective organic farming areas,
their export of organic products has increased, in particular the Indian volume of exports of
organic products has increased by 20%.

The study can be visualised at the
