As always, the organic fair "SANA" in Bologna has been the place were reflections about the evolution of the Italian organic sector are made. At marketing level, the request of organic food is steadily increasing, at domestic and international level: the IsMEA index grew form 100 to 317 in the years between 2000 and 2010. In 2009 and 2010, the growth in relation to the previous year had been, respectively, of 6.9% and 11.6%, when in the first 2011 four months the growth reached 11.5%, even if the Italian organic market has a share of only 2% in relation to the global food consumptions.
The article then reports the SINAB data on Italian agricultural surfaces dedicated to organic farming, which are stable, indicating that France and Germany are developing fast, getting closer to Italian numbers, and that Spain has now trespassed Italy. A reflection on such data poins out the question if a national strategy does exist, a strategy that should put organic farming among the productive system priorities, if this productive system wants to continue working on quality productions to compete on the national and international markets. But ideas and projects involving the production world and public authorities are lacking. The aim should be to bring the demand of organic production up to the same level of other European countries, covering at least 10% of the food consumptions. But this aim requests the trespassing of recent National Plans, to reach an overall growth project provided of a multidisciplinary approach, with a coordination table were all the stakholders, from production to distribution, could be really involved. A table where national and local public administrations must play a strong role. The organic farming sector growth has to be included among the national priorities in a context of an overall improvement of quality food productions.

“L’Informatore agrario”, No. 31, pages 13-14.
