Argentina’s Ministry of Agriculture has made official the entry into force of the Strategic Plan for Organic Production 2030, which aims to increase the number of producers in the sector. The plan seeks to ‘position organic production as a differentiated production model for both primary and industrial production, based on environmental protection, sustainability and sustainable development’. Globally, markets are demanding food that promotes increasingly sustainable agriculture and agro-industry, and organic production is one of the responses to the growing demands. Towards the end of 2020, in Argentina there was a 14% increase in sales and volumes of organic products compared to the previous year: the main reason was the change in consumption habits following the global Covid-19 pandemic.
The objectives of the plan are:
- to stimulate research, development, dissemination, transfer and adoption of technological innovations oriented towards organic production;
- to promote fiscal, commercial, financial and competition instruments for organic production;
- to promote organisational forms (primary and industrial), such as production networks through value chains, clusters, consortia, cooperatives, foundations, among others, that enable the development of the organic sector in the region;
- to increase the number of producers and processors of organic products;
- to increase production with more producers, destinations and exported organic products, especially those with higher added value.
