Over the past three years,\u00a021 organisations\u00a0from\u00a012\u00a0European countries have taken part in the Horizon 2020\u00a0OK-Net\u00a0EcoFeed\u00a0project to help farmers achieve 100% use of organic and regional feed for pigs and poultry.\u00a0The project has now ended. For this reason, since March 2021 updates and activities on the project will be limited. However, all items and articles will remain available on the project website https:\/\/ok-net-ecofeed.eu\/<\/a>.<\/p>\n

The project goal: 100% organic and regional feed for pigs & poultry<\/u><\/p>\n

Use of regional\u00a0feed is one of the\u00a0requirements of\u00a0the European organic regulation. For pigs and poultry, the\u00a0revised\u00a0European legislation requires that \u201cby 2022 at least 30% of the feed shall come from the farm itself or, if this is not feasible or such feed is not available, shall be produced in cooperation with other organic or in-conversion production units and feed operators using feed and feed material from the same region\u201d (Regulation EU, 2018\/848).<\/p>\n

Achieving\u00a0100% organic\u00a0diets for\u00a0monogastrics\u00a0is\u00a0challenging. The revised\u00a0EU\u00a0regulation acknowledges\u00a0this difficulty by allowing the use of 5% non-organic\u00a0protein\u00a0feed\u00a0for young animals.\u00a0Furthermore, importing animal feed has economical disadvantages for farmers and can compromise the sustainability and decrease consumers\u2019 confidence.<\/p>\n

The project belief: helping farmers and on-farm feed autonomy<\/u><\/p>\n

The OK-Net\u00a0Ecofeed\u00a0project supported on-farm feed autonomy and\u00a0helped\u00a0producers achieve 100% organic rations for monogastric animals.\u00a0All the project\u2019s work aimed at tackling the organic feed objectives for the coming years, including reducing the cost of feed production, improving sustainability and animal welfare, and satisfying consumer expectation for traceability of production.\u00a0To name few, the\u00a0Soil Association\u00a0in the UK\u00a0proposes the use\u00a0of sprouted seeds\u00a0as\u00a0a valuable green fodder\u00a0to ensure\u00a0good animal welfare, particularly\u00a0when\u00a0access to pasture for laying hens and broilers is restricted.\u00a0In Italy,\u00a0AIAB\u00a0evaluated the\u00a0possibility of growing camelina, which fits well\u00a0into the crop\u00a0rotation\u00a0and it may so sustain the\u00a0farm\u2019s self-production. Camelina cake is also a\u00a0protein-rich\u00a0feed,\u00a0and an efficient alternative to\u00a0the protein of soya. In Spain,\u00a0Ecovalia\u00a0tested\u00a0brewer\u2019s yeast, an industry by-product rich in protein and vitamin B\u00a0to be used as an\u00a0alternative source of protein\u00a0for pigs.<\/p>\n

The project results: knowledge exchange & Innovative solution for farmers<\/u><\/p>\n

OK-Net EcoFeed\u2019s experts and farmers run trials designed according to the regional potential and opportunities for farmers. More than 100 existing and new tools including reports, technical articles, leaflets, videos, booklets,\u00a0scientific articles,\u00a0results of\u00a0trials and practice abstracts were collected.<\/p>\n

Besides the variety of solutions and practices identified, OK-Net\u00a0EcoFeed\u00a0has created\u00a0a free\u00a0ration-planning software<\/strong><\/span><\/a>, allowing farmers and advisors to compose rations for organic pig and poultry\u00a0\u00a0that fit\u00a0best\u00a0to\u00a0their\u00a0conditions.<\/p>\n

All tools are available for direct, free download from the\u00a0Organic Farm Knowledge platform<\/strong><\/span><\/a>. During the OK-Net\u00a0EcoFeed\u00a0project,\u00a0a significant effort was made to expand the\u00a0Organic Farm\u00a0Knowlegde\u00a0platform to include all major themes related to organic farming, from\u00a0horticulture<\/strong><\/span><\/a>,\u00a0environmental protection<\/strong><\/span><\/a> to\u00a0marketing and agricultural trade<\/strong><\/span><\/a>. Users can now browse through the platform\u2019s\u00a0themes<\/strong><\/span><\/a> or\u00a0search the toolbox<\/strong><\/span><\/a> directly according to tool type, language, keywords and more.<\/p>\n

All project outcomes were compiled and analysed to identify research needs and barriers to innovation and propose recommendations for a better-targeted research and innovation agenda. The\u00a0full report is available on the project website<\/strong><\/span><\/a>.<\/p>\n
