Diseases like powdery mildew are increasingly problematic for organic viticulture. Resistant varieties are needed. Valentin Blattner has an innovative approach of breeding resilient grape varieties. Through this method, known as hybridization, new crosses often exhibit enhanced traits compared to their parent plants. They are not only more resilient against diseases like mildew and downy mildew but also boast improved grape quality. In this video, Valentin Blattner explains the process of breeding new grape varieties to cultivate plants that are more resistant and possess superior qualities. Classical breeding involves removing the male parts of the flower, leaving only the female part. Pollen from another plant is then used to pollinate this flower, resulting in a genetic mix of the two plants.
