Canada: 10% increase in organic sales

Canadian Organic Trade Association (COTA) reports that 66% of Canadian consumers spend at least some of their weekly grocery budget on organic items. This is a 10% increase from a year ago according to consumer and sales data released by the COTA in advance of an extensive organic sector report to be released in the fall.

MINISTER MARTINA: "ITALY ORGANIC LEADER. 300,000 HA CONVERTED"

Maurizio Martina, the Italian Minister of Agriculture, visited SANA, the International Exhibition dedicated to organic productions taking place in Bologna. "Italy confirms its European leadership in the organic sector –said Mr. Martina- : 300,000 hectares converted in 2016, an area equal to the entire province of Bologna, including homes and offices.

Wine Monitor: 1 Italian out of 4 drinks organic wine

One Italian out of four consumes organic wine.  Wine Monitor (Nomisma) analysis on Fibl data, released at Vinitaly 2017, indicates that in 2016 organic wine sales in Italy reached 11.5 million euro in the supermarkets, registering a +51% compared to 2015 (only +1% the increase of conventional wine sales).

Vinitaly: organic wine record sales at world level (+280%)

Organic wine market is one of the most promising agricultural sector in Italy and Europe: according to the latest analysis carried out by Wine Monitor (Nomisma) on FIBL data and presented at Vinitaly in Verona, organic wine sales in the decade between 2004 and 2015 increased by 295% in Europe and 280% at world level.

BioSuisse: an interesting collection of slides on organic farming

Useful for teaching and vulgarization, dedicated to professionals working for organic farming in Switzerland but certainly useful also for the same category who has to prepare presentations on the topic in other European countries, they are the latest “creation” of  BioSuisse and FIBL: 500 slides divided into 10 chapters including the “who’s who” of organic farming in Switzerland.

BioSuisse: the 2016 Annual Report

Following the BioSuisse annual report, Swiss and Liechtenstein organic farming continues to grow, with the record of 6,538 active operators. As a result, 6,144 producers now act according to the “Gemma” guidelines of Bio Suisse (“Gemma” is the BioSuisse private standard). These farms cultivate some 140,000 hectares of land, that is 13.4% of the total agricultural area.

Austria: organic retail sales data for 2014 and 2015 now available

New market data for Austria were published upon the occasion of BioFach 2017, together with data about surfaces and producers numbers for 2016, recently released by the Austrian Ministry of Agriculture. All the data,  collected by AMA-Marketing in collaboration with the sector organisation BIO Austria, are related to total retail sales in 2014 and 2015. According to these data, retail sales of organic products amounted to 1.3 billion euros in 2015 (1.2 billion in 2014).

Canada: new milestones in organic production

Also in Canada, as almost everywhere in the world, the total organic agricultural land is increasing. The Canada Organic Trade Association (COTA)'s latest research has revealed 5,053 certified organic operators in Canada, accounting for 2.43 million acres of land (983,386 ha).  "Canada's organic sector continues to rely on the voluntary disclosure of data by certifiers and provincial organizations. In 2016 we finally have universal participation, resulting in the most rigorous production data yet," said Tia Loftsgard, COTA's Executive Director.

Germany: organic farming continues to grow in 2016

BOLW - Ökologische Lebensmittelwirtschaft Bund eV, has published data on the organic farming sector in Germany for the year 2016. The German organic surface increased in 2016 to 90,000 hectares, reaching 1,185,471 hectares, + 8.9 % compared to 2015. The number of organic farms in the same period grew by 8.6%, with 2,119 new operators, for a total of 26.855 operators. Always in 2016, the German organic market as well saw sales increase by 9.9%, with a total turnover of 9.48 billion euro (in 2015 the volume was 8.62 billion).
