“The future of agriculture is organic”

The last summer was very difficult for the Italian fruit sector, fruit prices for the farmers reached the historical minimum. So producers have decided to change road: as a study of Confagricoltura (one of the three Italian Farmers Unions, the one of the big land-owners, Editor's note) reports, one of the most interesting roads has more and more become organic farming. This is because market quotations are higher, and because it allows to integrate income with high quality agritourism, the territory valorisation and the typical productions. The demand for organic products is constantly increasing, following ISMEA data (as reported in other recent SINAB news, see it for details, Editor's note). Furthermore, many producers are starting the activity of directly processing their own products, and this guarantees them an added value: in a period of one year, the farmers that included this new "asset" to their activity have increased by +22%. So, organic farming does not look anymore to a "niche" sector, but to an experimental, innovative and of large numbers sector.

“La Stampa”, 10 September 2010, page 25.
