How can we improve fish resilience, health, and sustainability while maintaining economic profitability? This is where SelectOrganic, a new EU-funded project, comes in. The project will develop selective breeding programs for four key species in aquaculture: European seabass, gilthead seabream, rainbow trout, and Atlantic salmon. By focusing on heat and disease resilience, animal health and welfare traits, and utilisation of alternative feeds, SelectOrganic aims to help farmers meet consumer expectations and deliver real environmental benefits.
As a partner in the project, IFOAM Organics Europe will play a central role in stakeholder engagement. Building on the IFOAM Aquaculture Sector Platform, we will create a forum to bring together key interest groups to exchange knowledge and shape future practices. In addition, we will coordinate the development of an exploitation plan to make sure project outcomes are shared widely and have a lasting impact on the sector.
With SelectOrganic, we look forward to supporting the transition to more resilient, sustainable, and welfare-oriented aquaculture systems in Europe. If you are interested in knowing more about the project and/or play an active role as a stakeholder, don’t hesitate to contact: pinja.poytaniemi@organicseurope.bio.
