Building water resilience through organic farming

Despite the Water Framework Directive, 63% of all surface water bodies are still not in a “good ecological condition”. Importantly, the European Environmental Agency1 has identified agriculture as one of the major pressures on the state of water in the EU. Organic farming can be an effective solution to the water crisis and has proven benefits on water resilience. It systemically protects and enhances water ecosystems’ natural functions and services, improving fresh and groundwater quality and availability and significantly reduces pollution and associated costs. These benefits can easily be amplified when taking a long-term and landscape approach.
