In the European Union, 9.6% of the UAA-Utilised Agricultural Area is organic; in Italy, the percentage rises to 18.7% and in Tuscany, the true “Queen of Organic”, it leaps over the record percentage of 35.8%, the highest among the five regions (Emilia-Romagna, Tuscany, Apulia, Calabria and Sicily) that have implemented organic farming in Italy in the last decade and that together account for 55% of the organic crops in Italy.

In 2012, the UAA in Italy for certified organic crops amounted to almost 91,000 hectares. Today (2022 figures) it has overcome 2,300,000 hectares. Ten years of remarkable growth that have led Tuscany to lead the way in terms of the incidence of cultivated surface areas, touching 36% (Italy as a whole records - as mentioned - 18.7%).

And in Tuscany's 229,000 hectares cultivated organically, viticulture also stands out with a production of 350,000 hectoliters, equal to 15% of the national production of organic wine and 32% of the areas destined for vines cultivated with organic methods and certification.

The percentage of 35.8 of agricultural land dedicated to organic farming makes it possible to cut several years ahead of schedule the goal that the European Union's Farm to Fork strategy had set itself, i.e. to dedicate 25% of the utilised agricultural land to organic farming by 2030.
